Join historian Tracey Panek for a colorful journey through the 162-year history of Levi Strauss & Co., a San Francisco native and the originator of the blue jean. Levi Strauss built a small company on the durability of a garment and the company still stands tall today in the heart of San Francisco. One of the original start-ups in the city, Levi Strauss & Co. was a crowd favorite at the 1915 Panama Pacific International Exposition (PPIE), featuring the award-winning assembly line as the first to apply this innovative manufacturing process in the apparel industry. During her talk, Ms. Panek will also showcase some of the most iconic pieces from the Levi Strauss & Co. Archives, from the oldest pair of jeans in existence to garments featuring milestone fabric innovations such as Stretch Lady Levi’s from the 1960s, customized bell bottoms from the 1970s, and stonewashing from the 1980s.
Tracey Panek manages the day-to-day works of the LS&Co. archives, answering historical questions and assisting designers, brand managers, executives and other employees whose work require historical materials. Prior to joining LS&Co., Tracey spent 14 years as a historian and archivist at AAA Northern California, Nevada, and Utah.
