Join us for a private virtual tour of the Billie Zangewa’s Thread for a Web Begun exhibition at the Museum of the African Diaspora. Led by Sr. Education Program Manager Sedey Gebreyes, we will learn about Zangewa’s silk collages. We will discuss the pieces as we move from one to another and pause to answer any questions from participants.

Billie Zangewa was born in Malawi and is based in Johannesburg. This is her first solo U.S. museum exhibition and includes examples of her work from the past 15 years, along with new pieces made specifically for the show. Many of the scenes depicted in her layered silk tapestries are autobiographical.

Zangewa deals with identity as well as socio-politics around gender and skin tone, in a gentle everyday manner. She also explores the different roles that women play in society, including motherhood and the impact that it has individually and collectively. The images in her work are deliberately decontextualized.

Please join us from the safety of your home to view Zangewa’s striking oeuvre. This is a unique opportunity to be part of her entirely new audience in the U.S. as her career has developed primarily in Europe and South Africa.
